I. E-Learning Expert John Bain Calls for Computer Science in School Curriculum
By Diane Phillips & Associates
Feb 6, 2012 - 10:56:14 AM
Nassau, Bahamas - In a technology driven age, Computer Science has become a fundamental field of study that drives the world, yet in The Bahamas, it remains an unchartered subject in school curriculums. Now, an e-learning specialist who has just returned from leading a seminar of international experts says it's time to wake up and smell the future.
“The study of Computer Science is just as important as Mathematics and English,” said John Bain, the Principal of JSB & Associates and Chairman of the e-Learning Committee of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. "The study of computer science is not a luxury, and should not be an elective, but an integral part of education. It is a vital, analytical discipline, and a system of logical thinking that is as relevant to the modern world as physics, chemistry or biology.”
Bain, a Chartered Forensic Accountant and one of the first 40 individuals worldwide to become a Certified Specialist in Asset Recovery (CSAR,) employs the use of Computer Science skills daily in his profession. Bain assists attorneys, individuals and companies involved in civil litigation matters that involve disputes over shares, partnerships, debt or other financial issues.
If Bain could change one thing concerning business in The Bahamas it would be to make Computer Science a mandatory subject in the curriculum.
“We are not preparing our children for tomorrow’s world,” he said. "The schools are not required to teach Computer Science, but ICT (Information and Communications Technologies) – a strange hybrid of desktop publishing lessons and Microsoft Office tutorials. While Microsoft Word and Excel are useful vocational skills and are suitable for office work, they are never going to equip anybody for a career in video games (gamification) or visual effects.”
Bain, the winner of the 2007 ACCA Achievement Award for the Americas is not alone in his position that Computer Science is a necessary subject for junior and high-school students. With lucrative industries such as Interactive Entertainment, a $3.1bn industry in the UK alone, heavily reliant on professionals skilled in computer science, the pendulum is swinging in favour of making this subject mandatory in junior and high school curriculums in developed nations worldwide. Industries necessary for developed nations to survive such as Aerospace & Defence, Chemical & Pharmaceutical and the Automobile industry all make use of super computers and skilled computer scientists.
In the UK, Education Secretary Michael Gove in a January 2012 speech to BETT, an educational technology trade fair, admitted that the office skills covered in ICT courses currently taught in British schools are out of date. "Imagine the dramatic change which could be possible in just a few years, once we remove the roadblock of the existing ICT curriculum,” stated Gove. “Instead of children bored out of their minds being taught how to use Word and Excel by bored teachers, we could have 11-year-olds able to write simple 2D computer animations using an MIT tool called Scratch.”
In the US, Google sponsors CS4HS (Computer Science for High School) an annual program launched to promote Computer Science high school and middle school curriculum. Google’s Education Group offers grants to universities who in turn develop 2-3 day workshops for high school Computer Science teachers. Grants are currently offered in the US, Canada, Europe, Middle East and Africa.
Strong Computer Science skills are necessary to develop the future designers, creators, and inventors of new technology. According to Bain, “computer science is not a luxury; it is essential knowledge for the 21st century.”

SUMMARY
Computer science is an important field of study that drives this 21st century world, it has to be concerned just as important as Mathematics or Science studies. Children must have the skill of basic computer programs such as Microsoft word or excel which will help them in life later on. Computer science is necessary to develop industries of automobile, aerospace, and other substantial ones for the good of men's life. And last one, computer skills are required to develop future designers, creators, and inventors of new technology.

My father is a notary stated in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, Indonesia, and here are the interview questions and their answers about the notary job...
1.
What exactly is a notary?
A notary is the only public official to have the authority to
create authentic deeds regarding to acts, treaty, and legalization which are established by the
statutal law or by the authorized one. Desired, and stated in the authentic deed,
are the ensurement of the precition of the date, and storage of the deed.
2. Why did you choose to be a notary?
I chose to be a notray, because it is not only a law
profession such as lawyer or law consultant. A notary is authorised to conduct
the duty assigned and entrusted by the country, duties which are born based
upon the provision of the statutes. And to run duties from the country in
serving the community through civil law which is generally specialized in
making authentic law for the certainty of law and justice within people of the
society. With this position I can apply the studies of law which I had learnt
by taking this position and duty as a public official from the country, as well
as to dedicate myself to serve my country through professional law services of
deed creations and consultations which are required by the society. And last,
through the professional context, we also get the honorarium from the clients
we serve.
3.
What kind of skills are required to
be a succesful notary?
To be a successful notary, one have to be professional and from
time to time, have to ‘upgrade’ him or herself with the study of law which is
always developing and becoming more complex from time to time. One have to
think critically, by which the main character of a critical one is to ask him
or herself whether is it true, what he/she had done, writen or told, aspires
the requirement of the client that will be stated in a deed. Besides that, a
notary always have to honor the dignity and values of notary, mostly about
being fair, just, not siding, and at least one have to understand different
languages, especially english and mandarin in this globalized era.
4. What are your daily activities as a notary ?
Generally, my daily activities as a notary are to give consultations
regarding law, especially in civil law, law of merchantship, law of
inheritance, law of defense, and law of land ownership. And to provide the
services of creating notarial deeds especially credit agreements and provision
of guarantees, deeds of trade, deeds of renting, and many others.
5. What are the difficulties you face in your job? (Apa kesulitan yang
dihadapi dalam pekerjaan anda?)
Until now I haven’t been through many hardships in doing my
duty as a notary, except in handling uncooperative clients especially in their demand
to have a legalized and complete deed for a short term of time.
6. What do you do to improve yourself from time to time?
The things I did from time to time are doing
self-introspection about how well I had done, keep studying law, and most
importantly, evaluating and learning from mistakes we experienced. We also have
to keep learning and improving our mastery of law, so that we can be more professional
in doing our duty, and to keep honoring the values of this position, honest,
fair, and not siding.
7. Your job is concerning things about law, what do you think about the
development law in Indonesia these days?
In my opinion, the development of law in Indonesia is getting
better if we see it from the perspective of legal structure and legal system.
But if we see it from the legal culture, it is very concerning that the
practics of law in Indonesia shows bad evidences, where can be seen from the brawl
done by students everywhere, or conduction of vigilante, and the unfair
punishments given to corruptors for what they’d done.
8. What are the prospects of this job for the future in your opinion?
As the jobs of a notary concern lots of things about law, hopefully
notary can also help in fixing the legal culture that has been a problem in
Indonesia, bad legal cultures are like corruption, students’ brawl, vigilante,
and many others by lecturing the community with concrete law studies and its
implementation. If this can be done, then at least this country can change with
the consistency and supremacy of law.
IV. Interview report
“A great country honors the values of
its law..” Imagine a country without this law profession, who will serve the
society for law needs? Who is responsible for the continuity, dignity, and the
honor of law? One should answer, ‘a notary...’ If you only know about lawyers,
advocats, law consultants, etc, then you should know about this one too.
For example is Mr. Petrus Yani Sukardi, S.H. He is a notary stated in the region
of Pontianak who had worked as a notary for 13 years as a notary. He himself
chose to be a notary because he wanted to apply the law studies he learnt for
the community and the country, he’s a man with love for his nation.
Daily Jobs of the Notary:
It is noon in an office building, in
a room, sounds of scratching pens from the notary’s hand can be heard. It was a
treaty was made there, a treaty of credital agreement for a huge company. This
is an example how notaries build and serve this country. Notary, a profession,
a public official, a law enforcer, as well as a servant dedicated to the
country, plays a vital role in the
community. One’s job is to ensure the conviction of law in the community,
especially by creating authentic deeds which are required by the people. These
deeds regard things related to daily life aspects in a society, for instant,
credital agreements for companies, land and property ownerships, inheritance,
as well as trading and renting businesses.
The Methods of Improvements:
The development and study of law in
Indonesia always gets more complex from time to time, this demand notaries to
develop and improve him or herself to with higher mastery of law concepts. The
best way according to Mr. Petrus Yani Sukardi, S.H. is to do a
self-introspection regarding to what one had done, whether it is written or
told. Next is to improve mastery of law studies, as notary is the same like any
other people, they had been a learner and is still a long-life learner. And then
is to implement the learnings into real life through words and actions,
besides, what is the use of having ‘S.H’ or ‘M.H’ behind names if they can just
memorize things but not doing things, it’s just a waste. And at last, is to
keep honoring the values and regulations of law that bind him or her.
Prospects of this job for the future:
When we talk about notaries, we
wouldn’t be far from law aspects. Law binds people and their lifes with rules
and ethics. It makes life in the correct order with peace. But each and
everyday, as we all know, people keep to disobeying law and bad things happen
to the country, for example, corruption. It has been a major problem to this
country. It is an irony however, statutal laws had stated hundreds of chapters
regarding to the prohibition of corruption, politicians, ministers,
representatives of people had vowed to serve the country without corruption...
But the fact is, ‘rats’ and ‘mices’ are still punching holes to our ‘money
sack’, and now comes the big questions, Where’s the law? Where’s the love of
our leaders? Where are the law enforcers? It takes professionals and great people to
answer those. Eventhough it is not clearly stated as a job of a notary by the
statutal law, notary as a law enforcer too, also can play a role in this
problem in the future. With his/her understandings of law, one can teach lower
societies about values and importance of law, ‘A man won’t steal the country’s
money if he’s taught not to steal candies as a kid’. If a notary
can do these things,
people will appreciate and respect the country’s law, so that we can bring a
better future to the country. These are the prospects I hope that notaries can
and should do in the future...
“If this country wants to rise, then
now is the time to change”
V. An essay about 'success'
ARE
OUR LIFES SUCCESSFUL?
Everyone has
their own target and dreams. One thing everybody probably dreamt of is, being a
successful person. The word ‘success’ itself cannot be defined universally
because its meaning varies differently within peoples’ perspective. For one
person, it ‘s about being rich, for another, it is about being smart or clever,
for others, it’s about being happy. For
me myself, it is an achievement of life, it is an intersection point between an
arising opportunity and our readiness in taking it. Everyone set their own
goals in being successful, but not everyone can make those dreams come true. So
the problem is, how can we achieve success in this life ?...
Even it has
different meanings, the way to reach success is clearly the same. In life,
reaching success is like a long journey, we have to take it step by step, and
focus on the destination we want to reach. One cannot just lay down on a couch
and get everything he wants instantly. It takes hard work, determination, and
character to reach success. The ‘no pain no gain’ philosophy plays the main
role in one’s struggle to reach success. Another important thing is, failures
are obvious and are actually very
important in the proccess of reaching success. It strengthens you and train you
mentally in the future. It gives you experience and valuable lessons teachers
cannot give you at school. People may give up, but what they don’t know is that
the success is right in front of their own eyes when they had given up. So
never give up even if you fail 1000 times or more...
And then if we
talk about determination and character, it is actually a simple thing. When we
pick our path in struggling for success, we have to believe on ourselves, our
capabilities, and our dreams, because these are the things that strengthens us
in our journey. Even when other people tease your dreams, calling it non-sense,
or impossible, we have to be principled. Don’t let the sounds coming from other
people’s mouth disturb the ones coming from your own heart. Anyway, one have to
dream ‘big’ to achieve ‘big’, don’t they?
Besides the
things above, there are also things to be considered that can help us achieve
success. One example is, education. In this 21st century, achieving success is
getting different from the past times. If we can achieve success without formal
education in the 1990’s, things are changing in the 2000’s. Work standards are
getting higher, if you’re a high-school graduate in the 1990’s you can still
work in an office as an employee, but now even bachelor graduates have hard
time just to be employed. Not only that, what we have in our brain are far more
valuable than the physical materials we have, like gold or money, knowledge and
skills will be our main ‘capital’ to work in the society later on. That is why
education is very important, we must also be knowledgable, especially in
general knowledge, be creative, innovative, and efficient in working. Remember,
we humans are all life-long learners, and education is a mine that never runs
out of gold.
And at last,
is attitude... Good manners should be maintained before and after reaching
success. Before reaching success, we should maintain the low-profile attitude,
we have to maintain emotions, and we have to be smart in putting ourselves in
the right place and time. This will build a good realtionship with other people
that can help us smoothen our path to success. And then after the success, we
may not be snobbish or to keep showing off after reaching success, as a human
being, our job is not only to make life valuable to ourselves, but also to
others. There has been stories about people who are rich and successful, but they
become greedy and materialist, they forget about values of love, then they
ended up having messed up families and a bad life. Well, life is like a game, we
kept on doing it, we did so many things, reaching new levels, but sometimes we
don’t even know where we are, what we have actually reached, or whether we
actually win or lose...
Finally, I
hope this persuasive essay will do some good to us all, especially for us who
are targetting success in life like me myself.
“Success is
already there, waiting for us to struggle and grab it...”
